2017: Rachel Burch

Lincolnshire based Potter

Rachel is participating in ESC Artists Stamford Arts Centre Autumn Exhibition in the Gallery, 25 October – 5 November, and Artists Markets in the Ballroom on 11 June & 5 November 2017.

The pieces I am showing at this exhibition are the result of months of experimentation.  I like making large bowls that appear to only just balance, and have focused on the internal spaces within the pots. Throwing lines are purposefully left in as are dents, undulations and fingerprints.

I have been building vessels that are composed of thrown clay and hand built sections, these are then carved or cut into.  The glaze palette keeps to similar tones of whites, greys and charcoals, and colours are layered to a give more complex finish.

All my work is hand thrown stoneware, which I decorate in my own glazes.

I use a palette of very soft blues, greys and whites alongside a matt charcoal and richer bailey blue. My work is increasingly deconstructed, glaze lines that are irregular and clay that is torn and showing fingerprints as well as throwing rings. I want people to enjoy holding and using  my pots and feel the making process.

I have exhibited at Doddington Hall Easter and Christmas craft fairs for the last two years, also at Kelham and The Big Craft Event on the Lincolnshire show ground. My pots are sold in Lincoln in ‘The Artisan Maker’ which is in Bailgate. I have also exhibited at other local artists studios, open garden events and local fetes. I also sell my work privately now that people know me.
