“ …grounded in craftsmanship yet driven by a desire to push boundaries and explore what timber can become when approached with curiosity and discipline.“

Mathew Gardner is a British Wood Artist whose practice is rooted in professional woodturning and shaped by continual exploration. A Member of the Register of Professional Turners (RPT), he developed his technical discipline through the lathe, building an instinctive understanding of balance, grain behaviour and structural integrity. Years of working directly with timber have given him a deep respect for the material — its strengths, its tensions and its limitations. That foundation underpins all of his work, even as his practice has evolved beyond traditional turning.
While some pieces begin on the lathe, others are carved, burned or shaped through more sculptural processes. His body of work spans both functional and non-functional forms — from vessels that honour proportion and restraint, to more expressive pieces that push surface, texture and form. What unites them is not a single technique, but a commitment to responding to the material rather than forcing it.
Conversation is central to Mathew’s practice. Collectors are often drawn into discussions about process, technique and intention — an exchange that reflects the depth of knowledge behind each piece. The work is not rushed. Decisions are tested, reconsidered and refined. Nothing leaves the workshop until Mathew is fully satisfied that it holds balance — visually, physically and instinctively.
His work continues to evolve, grounded in craftsmanship yet driven by a desire to push boundaries and explore what timber can become when approached with curiosity and discipline. Each piece stands independently, resolved on its own terms, and contributes to an ongoing, developing body of work.
