One day after I graduated, I had that ‘light bulb’ moment and I realised I did not need to choose one medium to work in and could mix them up any way I so wished.
I set up Heartwork in 2011 after giving up teaching Art to concentrate on my personal creative endeavours. Although I trained as a Graphic Fine Artist specialising in Photography, I would say my specialism now is in ‘Mixed Media’.
As a student I found it really difficult to stick to one medium, technique or idea and this was a constant source of frustration for my tutors who appeared to be intent on trying to put my work in a metaphorical box.
One day after I graduated, I had that ‘light bulb’ moment and I realised I did not need to choose one medium to work in and could mix them up any way I so wished. From that day on I have never looked back and have happily dabbled in all things from photography, collage, assemblage, painting and more recently, film making.
I try to rely on my intuition from conception of an idea through to completion of the final piece. An emphasis on colour, texture and scale is apparent in all of my work, along with repeated symbolism that corresponds with my memory and incessant need to express myself visually. My art is a good insight into a hyperactive imagination, and how the subconscious and conscious constantly fight for attention producing layer upon layer of thoughts, ideas and emotions. Subject matter, techniques and choices of media ping all over the place in a playful manner encouraging the viewer to experience creativity in its purest form.
